Invisalign Tips

Many people know that Invisalign is a great solution to braces if you don't want to experience the look and feel of traditional metal braces. What few people know, though, is that just like traditional braces, Invisalign requires proper care to work effectively. Good oral hygiene is highly important, even when you are wearing something in your mouth that you can take out to eat with. It's still likely that your aligners can build up plaque if not treated properly. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, ask yourself the following questions:

1.) Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.
2.) Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.
3.) Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits.

Have a safe and happy New Year!

Katherine Heigl Struggles with Crooked Teeth

We at Sellers Orthodontics know everyone struggles with little imperfections. Making crooked teeth straight, stained teeth sparkling white and chipped teeth smooth is part of what I do as an orthodontist.

Consider Katherine Heigl, award-winning actress, and considered by many the Grace Kelly of our day. She describes struggling with crooked teeth her whole life until finally there came a point when she said "enough is enough!" She decided to do something to straighten her teeth.

I think you will enjoy this clip. Please feel free to leave comments, tell me what you think! Have you ever struggled with this same problem? Have you felt the relief of smiling to reveal a straight, bright smile after hiding crooked ones for so long? Contact us so we can hear your story, or help you create a new beautiful smile and a story of your own!

Its Flu Season!

Since colds and flu are spread so easily in this environment, we have encouraged our patients and their families to reschedule appointments if they are experiencing any flu-like symptoms. We have also been encouraging our staff to stay at home if they are feeling sick. In addition, we spray all community surfaces several times daily, use disposable pre-pasted toothbrushes at our brushing stations and cover all headrests with disposable plastic. There is anti-bacterial soap available in our restroom and a motion activated hand dryer too. If you are feeling the flu symptoms, be sure to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated!

Have a safe and happy Halloween from all of us at Sellers Orthodontics!

When Are Two Phases of Treatment Necessary?

Usually patients in orthodontic treatment already have their permanent teeth – but in some cases we have to start treatment earlier, even before the patient’s permanent teeth come in. We call this “two-phase treatment.”

When we have patients with clear developmental problems at an early age, it’s best to start work when they are young, before the problems get bigger and more difficult to treat. Examples include an upper or lower jaw that is not growing correctly, or a mouth growing in a way that doesn’t leave enough room for all the permanent teeth to come in.

In these cases we will start early and do one round of treatment – phase one – while the patient still has “baby teeth.” Phase one usually does not involve braces, but can include a different type of appliance that helps the jaw grow into place properly, such as a retainer. We’ll follow up with phase two usually a few years later, when permanent the patient’s permanent teeth have come in. Phase two often does involve braces and sometimes headgear.

In order to catch early problems, we recommend that children have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven (and so does the American Association of Orthodontics). However, if your dentist or pediatrician sees any sign that early treatment might be necessary, he or she may recommend your child visit an orthodontist even sooner. For more information about two-phase orthodontics, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sellers please call 704-837-0420.

Continuing Education at Sellers Orthodontics

Continuing education is a great way to keep your practice fresh. Dr. Sellers participates in about 100 hours of continuing education every year! Our staff recently had a consultant come to the practice for 2 full days. We learned new ways to make our schedule more efficient as well as improve our interaction with both our patients and the public. Our staff participates in “Webinars” routinely including clinical as well as administrative classes.

Not only do we participate in classes, we try to educate our family of patients about orthodontics and general dental health too! October is Orthodontic health month, and Dr. Sellers recently spoke to his son’s class about the benefits of early orthodontic visits. Each student was given a goodie bag to take home which had a letter to the parents included.

The non-surgical approach to a beautiful smile

The field of orthodontics is constantly improving, and Dr. Sellers is at the forefront of these new, less invasive forms of non-surgical treatment. We have several stories about how we were able to treat people non surgically with fabulous results!

This gentleman had been in a catastrophic auto accident and almost died. He pulled through all the broken bones and body parts but was left with a very compromised bite. He was unable to chew his food. Every other orthodontist he had been to recommended more surgery, which of course he was opposed to! We at Sellers Orthodontics were able to correct his bite in less than a year using the Damon System with a great result!

We encourage you see us at Sellers Orthodontics for a complimentary consultation. We can then determine what treatment is best for your individual needs. Give us a call at 704-837-0420 today!

A Heartfelt Patient Letter for Sellers Orthodontics

A few months back we received a heartwarming, handwritten letter from a patient, and we wanted to share it with you all!

Dr. Sellers,

I am a previous patient of your nearly four years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday; the day of my consultation. You walked into the office, looked into my eyes with such sincerity and asked "what can I do for you?" I replied with "please just give me a nice smile." You then left the room and your lovely head nurse at the time was left to talk about the price. The amount that was initially given to us was way beyond our budget.

I went home that afternoon heartbroken, my dreams of having a nice smile were shattered. My mother and I were discussing our next step that same afternoon when we received a phone call. The phone call that would change my life. You offered to fix my teeth for far less than you originally stated. Unbelievable. Not a day goes by, Dr. Sellers, that I don't think about that day, and how God blessed me.

I am graduating from Queens University of Charlotte, and I can't tell you enough how thrilled and yet emotional I am. I am now going on job interviews and networking as much as possible, and i have all the confidence in the world! My confidence, Dr. Sellers, started with you. You gave me exactly what I hoped for, a nice smile. I hope you realize how amazing, noble, honorable and cariong you are as a doctor and man. You change and transform peoples' lives. You make a difference. Everyone in your office was so pleasant and wonderful, and they too deserve a thank you.

I hope everything is going great with you, because you deserve the best. God bless you, and your family. Once again thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Cardiodontics: The Heart Mouth Connection From Sellers Orthodontics

If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis), you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease! Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth. So we at Sellers Orthodontics want to let you know some interesting facts and ways to treat the disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

"Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis – an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone. Bacteria that live and reproduce on the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Symptoms may include the following:
--redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss
--halitosis, or bad breath
--gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
--"pockets" between the teeth and gums indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
--loose teeth
Gum inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis. If your hands bled when you washed them, you would be concerned. Yet, many people think it's normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.

Periodontal Disease Affects Your Health

Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of health problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:
--Heart disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease. Gum disease also is believed to worsen existing heart disease.
--Stroke: Gum disease may increase the risk of the type of stroke caused by blocked arteries
--Diabetes: People with diabetes and periodontal disease may be more likely to have trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetics with healthy gums.
--Premature births: A woman who has gum diseases during pregnancy may be more likely deliver her baby too early and the infant may be more likely to be of low birth weight.

Combating Periodontal Disease

--See your dentist! See your dentist every six months for a checkup! Regular professional cleanings and checkups make you feel good, look good, and could be a lifesaver!
--Brush and floss daily. Take your time and do it right!
--Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash helps to disinfect the teeth and gums, and reduces the number of bacteria.
--Straighten your teeth. Crowded teeth are nearly impossible to keep clean. Orthodontic treatment can greatly reduce inflammation and periodontal disease.

Why Is It So Important To Have Straight Teeth? Dr. Sellers Explains

Some people wonder why we at Sellers Orthodontics work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Sellers can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Lets Talk About Sports with Dr. Sellers

It may be summer, but the fall sports season is just around the corner. For contact sports like football, we at Sellers Orthodontics want you protect your teeth, especially while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

We have complimentary mouth guards available at our office. We ask that our patients use that specific type of mouthguard while in active orthodontic treatment, as they are specifically intended for use with braces. Our mouthguards are available with or without straps and in a variety of colors, just ask! Patients using Invisalign can slip these mouthguards right over their aligners too!

Protect those teeth,

What’s so special about an Orthodontist? Sellers Orthodontics

"Dentists, Orthodontists, they're all the same right?" At Sellers Orthodontics we hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming an orthodontist Dr. Sellers started out in dental school and earned a DDS (dental degree), just like your dentist. After dental school however, Dr. Sellers decided he wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So he stayed in school for a few more years and became an expert in orthodontics; which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn't it nice to know there's a dental expert here to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

The Damon System: Better Results in Less Time at Sellers Orthodontics

A lot of our patients (especially you parents!) come to the orthodontist thinking traditional braces are the only answer. Here at Sellers Orthodontics, we offer the Damon System, a revolutionary new braces system that can give you better results in less time!

Am I right for the Damon System?

Sellers Orthodontics will evaluate your eligibility for the Damon System, and the procedure can be performed for children and adults alike!

What makes Damon braces better?

Probably the biggest advantage of Damon braces over traditional brackets is the amount of time and effort involved. Sellers Orthodontics can often cut months off of the total treatment time for patients using the Damon System, and less visits to our office are necessary to make adjustments.
In addition, the Damon System brackets are:

• Cleaner- Damon brackets don’t have the elastic of traditional brackets, and are less prone to all the plaque buildup that your dentist warns you about!

• Discreet- Damon braces are smaller and have fewer parts than traditional brackets, making them less noticeable and more comfortable.

• No tightening- With the Damon system, Sellers Orthodontics can position your teeth and avoid frequent adjustments. This also reduces the need for complicated tooth extractions or surgery.

If you have been thinking about an orthodontic procedure, come see us at Sellers Orthodontics for an assessment to see if the Damon System is right for you!

Is Invisalign® Really Customized for Each Patient? Dr. Sellers Explains

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. And since the aligners are virtually invisible, nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Keith Sellers is a certified Invisalign provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, give us a call at 704-837-0420.

Meet Dr. Keith Sellers

Hello, my name is Dr. Keith Sellers, and I am a Charlotte orthodontist. A North Carolina native, I grew up in Statesville with my two older brothers. Presently, my wife, DeAnna, and I reside in South Charlotte with our children, Madison, Sydney, and Jake.

Children are very important to me. I am blessed to not only have three of my own, but to work with children throughout the greater Charlotte area. I am very involved in schools in our community. We regularly donate Sellers Orthodontic treatment certificates to school auctions. So we not only help children achieve the smiles they deserve, but we raise money for the schools. I support the Cities in Schools program, the Police Athletic League, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and First Tee Organization, the YMCA Community Outreach Program, and Campus Crusade for Christ.

One of my favorite ways to support my patients and the community at large is through sponsoring local sports teams. Whether it is basketball, baseball, football, soccer, swimming, or gymnastics, we jump at the chance to give our kids an opportunity to excel.

Sometimes students in the community are interested in becoming an orthodontist, I love when people want to spend some time in our practice and job-shadow, seeing what life as an orthodontist entails. We have several students who have completed summer internships to really live the orthodontist life.

I spent many years pursuing orthodontics myself. My undergraduate studies were completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I loved the school, and North Carolina, so much that I continued on to earn my Doctor of Dental Science. But I wasn’t done yet! I went on to St. Louis University to receive my Master’s in Orthodontics. I am such an avid supporter of education for everyone, including myself, so I make sure to stay on the forefront of new developments and discoveries in the field of orthodontics by attending continuing education courses throughout the year. I am also a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, the Charlotte Dental Society, and the North Carolina Association of Orthodontists. I am on the Board of Directors and currently the president of the North Carolina Association of Orthodontists.

I frequently lecture to various orthodontic and dental groups throughout the year. I am recognized by the Align Technology Institute as a Premier Elite Provider of Invisalign. I am also a member of the elite Schulman Study Group where my peers voted my practice as #1!

When I am not working at the office or in the community, I enjoy golfing, tennis, chess, backgammon, and reading. My favorite books are Seasons of Life, Golf’s Greatest Journey, and See You at the Top.
